Our Story

  • 1980

    Ted Koplar establishes World Events Productions. Eponymous show “World Events ‘80” is released in Syndication, featuring a young reporter named Bob Costas.

  • 1982

    Koplar teamed with Jack Galmiche and Frank Babcock to produce three nationally syndicated shows featuring Kickboxing. The shows were produced and distributed nationally from St Louis, Las Vegas, and New York's Madison Square Garden.

  • 1984

    Voltron: Defender of the Universe explodes onto the scene, forever changing kids TV.

  • 1986

    In partnership with Make a Wish Foundation, WEP charters an L-1011 Eastern Airlines plane (dubbed the "Voltron Express") to transport 35 children from Washington, D.C. to Disneyworld. The Voltron Force roamed the plane and delighted children en route, causing the pilot to circle so they could continue the fun!

  • 1987

    WEP releases follow-up hit Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs.

  • 1988

    WEP releases Denver the Last Dinosaur, featuring the world’s most catchy theme song!

  • 1989

    WEP releases 4-part series Vytor, the Starfire Champion.

  • 1998

    WEP releases Voltron: The Third Dimension, the first all-CGI show to be produced entirely in the U.S.

  • 1999

    WEP acquires Calico World, deepening the partnership with Tom and Claudia Burton that produced Denver the Last Dinosaur, among other shows.

  • 2011

    WEP partners with Kickstart Productions and Classic Media to release the all-new animated series Voltron Force on Nickelodeon's Nicktoons Network.

  • 2016

    Dreamworks Animation’s 78-episode saga Voltron: Legendary Defender is released on Netflix.

  • 2018

    Produced by Zagtoon and Method Animation, the all-new Denver the Last Dinosaur premieres on France’s M6.

  • 2022

    WEP partners with Amazon Studios to produce a live-action feature film to be directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber and produced by Todd Lieberman and Bob Koplar.

Defender of the Universe

Hi, I’m Bob. I don’t really defend the universe. But I try to defend the six-ish square feet that comprise my desk. My primary qualifications are that I can spell my name backwards and I believe in the power of a great story. 

When I saw Voltron at the tender age of five, it changed my life–almost as much as Top Gun would two years later. Not just because it was my dad’s show (Voltron that is, not Top Gun). It was the awesome power of togetherness–of humanity–to triumph over impossible odds. The score still rings in my head louder than any of the rad 80s music that dominates my playlist. 

My ambition is to bring great stories to life. To start with compelling characters on the page, combine them with authentic acting, stunning visuals and a killer soundtrack, and make something magical. And maybe, just maybe, move someone the way I was at age five.
